Easy guide to filing an insurance claim

A loss can turn your world upside down. Eight steps that keep the process moving.

A car accident or damage to your property can turn your world upside down. The sudden loss can leave you with anxiety, frustration, anger, or sadness. If you experience a claim, these simple steps can help the process proceed smoothly.

  1. 01Call 911. Does the loss require emergency first responders? If so, call 911. If not, perhaps a tow truck or other friendly assistance.
  2. 02Is everyone ok? Attend to injuries, whether yours, your loved ones', or other parties'. You may not be trained to perform life-saving efforts, but you do have an obligation to make sure others involved receive any medical attention required. Do not assume they are ok or able to call for help themselves.
  3. 03Minimize damage by removing items from harm. Property damage can be minimized by moving belongings out of the way in cases such as fire or water intrusion. Take caution and do not put yourself in danger.
  4. 04Take notes and pictures at the time of loss. Details matter, especially while everything is fresh. Note any witnesses and get their information. On private property, such as a parking lot, getting law enforcement to provide a report can be difficult. A witness can help determine fault, even if the other party admits fault initially.
  5. 05Contact your agent, even if you feel it is someone else's fault. Having your company handle the claim eases the frustration of knowing who represents your interests. On private property, a carrier may find it 50/50 or no-fault due to state laws.
  6. 06Get estimates. Your right as a consumer allows you to work with a vendor or contractor of your choosing. Most carriers have a preferred network they have experience with, but you are not required to use them. Get multiple estimates and feel comfortable with how you get whole again.
  7. 07Work with the adjuster to ensure smooth handling and disbursement of claim funds. Make sure the adjuster has a way to reach you. They may need follow-up documents such as vehicle titles, receipts, or appraisals. Check disbursement can be delayed while a carrier waits on documents.
  8. 08Communicate with your agent after the claim is completed. You may now qualify for a new discount. A major component of home or dwelling premium is the age of the roof, heating, electrical, and plumbing. If you replaced the entire roof covering after a hail claim, the roof age is now new rather than 15 or 20 years old. Contact your agent so the policy reflects current conditions.

No matter what type of claim you experience it likely will be a bad day, but it does not need to make it a bad life. Take time, at least annually, to review your policies with your agent. Price matters, but coverage pays.
